Since this post, I've learned the Augen cannot load standard Android apps. Without the universe of Android apps, it's pretty crippled. Not sure why - something in a TWIT episode about Augen not being formal members of the Android developers group (or something like that).

At first glance, I thought "excellent", but after reading the reviews, apparently the processing is fairly slow. That website has more news about other companies releasing similar products to give Apple a run for their $.

I agree, as we move into LED and other lighting fixtures that are not as simple as incandescent, power factor correction (PFC) with become more and more of and issue.

The LED fixtures have poor PFC because they are using low cost switcher power supplies that do not have built in PFC. Adding PFC circuitry to switcher power supplies is not difficult, but for small loads, there are no regulatory mandates for PFC. So to save money, it's not added.

But, for industrial equipment drawing significant current, there are international regulations for power line quality (line noise) and power factor correction (PFC). I've been dealing with power factor corrected switcher power supplies for many years now as part of my job designing technical imaging equipment. I believe PFC will start to be regulated even for small power loads, and that's when we will see an improvement. Until then, we need to keep reading PLSN articles and others.

Thanks for the kind words and the plug. This is an issue of growing importance as we look more and more towards LED fixtures and unconventional lighting loads and automation in the theatre and live event production. I've measured the power factor in LEDs as low as about 50% and it can be even lower in the synchronous motors we use for flying truss structures and to move set pieces and video displays around on the stage. So watch your amps, and perhaps even more importantly, watch the load on your neutral in a 3-phase system.

Art, thank you for the plug. I have ordered the first proof copy from the printer. Now the interminable wait for it to arrive to see how the book looks and feels.

Art:

On behalf of the entire Amundson family, thank you for your kind comments. Mark had a deep passion for audio and took joy in the many friends he met and touched through these "channels." It was much more than an avocation for him and I know many of you share that same passion. Keep reaching for that great sound!

Regards, Mike Amundson (Mark's brother)
