What’s a “Birdie” light? Less than Par

Many in theatre lighting are familiar with a “birdie” light.  It’s a small, typically 6″ long par style fixture that uses an MR16 or similar lamp inside.  Basically a tiny parcan.  But what’s the orgin of the term?  My friend Jeremy educated me.  “a birdie is less than Par”.  Loved it!
